Matrix-assisted laser desorption/ionization Time-of-Flight (MALDI-TOF) mass spectrometry has become one of the most powerful and widely applied technologies for genetic and proteomic applications. MALDI-TOF MS offers a new and promising approach to the rapid identification of pathogens and offers powerful advantages over traditional biochemical and genetic approaches. Identification of microorganisms by MALDI-TOF MS can be applied to a wide array of bacteria, yeasts, and molds and does not require laborious cultivation steps. A review of microorganism ID by MALDI-TOF MS will be given, including basic principles of sample preparation, spectra acquisition and database identification.
