Vitamin D Assays: What You Measure Matters

There is either a pandemic of vitamin D deficiency or laboratories are making incorrect measurements, or both. While the importance of this vitamin in many areas beyond bone health is becoming recognized, there are reports, often touted in the popular press, that adequate vitamin D intake is the answer to many major diseases. The resolution between fact and fiction in vitamin D research is complicated by the inherent complexities of vitamin D biochemistry and measurement as well as by the clinical complexity of vitamin D metabolism.
