Successful participation in proficiency testing (PT) is a requirement for running an accedited clinical laboratory. Doing so helps to ensure that the data generated can be used by physicians in the care of their patients. The College of American Pathologists runs perhaps the largest PT program in the world, and many pathologists volunteer their time to help design and evaluate the program in an effort to use it not only to monitor laboratory performance but also to improve it. In this session, several specific examples particularly relevant to mass spectrometry will be discussed: sirolimus, vitamin D, estradiol, and testosterone.
