Xenotropic Murine leukemia virus-Related Virus (XMRV) is a novel gammaretrovirus that has sparked heated debate throughout the scientific community regarding its role in disease pathogenesis and progression. Given the conflicting data concerning the role of XMRV and disease, it is of paramount importance to develop standardized diagnostic testing that can specifically identify the presence of the XMRV in patient samples. We describe the development of a mass spectrometric method to identify XMRV specific proteins from biological samples which, once optimized, may be used to better understand the prevalence of XMRV infection as well as the potential relationship between XMRV and human disease.
