The unique physical, chemical and optical properties of gold nanorods (AuNR) provide a highly flexible MS based biosensor platform. Here, we describe the experiments using lipid bilayer capped AuNR for the selective capture of low abundance analytes from simple and complex mixtures. In these experiments, lipid bilayers are tailored to replicate the behavior of cellular membranes, giving them an advantage for use in several biological applications by offering a model system which function similar to cell surfaces.
