Background

FeMS+ is an international nonprofit community-led initiative that supports and empowers a global network of women scientists in the field of mass spectrometry. FeMS+ offers awards, networking events, mentorship programs, and training. FeMS+ is run entirely by worldwide volunteers and has less than 1% annual overhead expenses.

Program Objectives

“Out of the Shadows” is the FeMS+ premier leadership development program for women scientists with 10+ years post-graduation work experience, who wish to advance their career towards senior leadership positions (executives, deans, directors). This program aims to provide opportunities for personal and professional development, with the overarching strategy to increase the number of women as senior leaders.

The Case for Presence and Storytelling

A study by the Center for Talent Innovation, a not-for-profit research organization in New York, reported that executive presence counts for 26% of what it takes for high potential women to get promoted.

Shockingly, it also reported that 81% of the women surveyed were unclear about how to act on the feedback they’ve received to increase their presence.

Program Goals

The objectives of the 'Power Up Your Presence With Storytelling' workshop are for participants to learn to:

  • • Increase your executive presence
  • • Look and sound more self-assured when presenting your ideas
  • • Discover the power of storytelling as a leadership and influencing tool
  • • Experience the impact a personal story can have as a relationship building
  • • Learn the 5-part narrative structure to put a powerful business story together
  • • Craft and practice telling stories showcasing your presence

Additionally, by sharing stories, participants build stronger relationships with each other.

The Approach: Experiential

Our coach's approach is highly informed by her performing arts background.

She will share with the group what actors understand about stage and screen presence as a way to understand how to increase their executive presence.

Learnings are tied back to the workplace.

She uses an interactive approach that includes a mix of acting exercises, content, modeling behaviors, paired exercises, conversation with participants and direct feedback to participants on the impact of their own personal presence and their stories.

Much like actors in the rehearsal room, participants in the workshop will be on their feet learning and practicing the skills of presence.
